Exam boards & regions
Which 11 plus exam is your child sitting?
The eleven plus is not one exam. Different areas use different boards and different question mixes, so it helps to know what you are preparing for.
GL Assessment
The most widely used board, and the style ElevenUp follows. GL papers are multiple choice and typically cover English comprehension, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Used across many selective areas including Buckinghamshire, Kent, Birmingham, Lincolnshire and parts of Essex.
CEM, CSSE and SET
Some regions use their own tests — CSSE in Essex, SET in Sutton, and CEM-style papers elsewhere. The underlying skills overlap heavily: vocabulary, comprehension, mental arithmetic and reasoning, all of which ElevenUp drills.
What is on the 11 plus syllabus?
Maths. Four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages, ratio and proportion, area, perimeter and angles, averages, time and speed, sequences and simple algebra — usually under real time pressure.
English. Comprehension, vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, spelling, punctuation and grammar, including spotting errors in a sentence.
Verbal reasoning. Letter sequences, alphabet codes, word analogies, odd one out and number series — logic puzzles built from words and letters.
Non-verbal reasoning. Shape sequences, matrices and codes. Many GL regions include a non-verbal paper, so check what your target school sets.
When should 11 plus preparation start?
Most children sit the exam in September of Year 6, which means the useful preparation window runs through Year 5. Starting early and doing a little most days beats cramming — and it is far kinder on a ten-year-old. A realistic pattern is fifteen minutes on school days, with full timed mock papers introduced in the last few months so exam conditions feel familiar rather than frightening.
Results are reported as a standardised score rather than a raw mark, adjusted for age so that younger children in the year group are not disadvantaged. Because the score depends on how the whole cohort performs, no tutor or app can promise a particular number — only better preparation.
